Finding Topics To Write AboutFinding Topics To Write About

Your first port of call when trying to find topics to write for your particular niche is the Google Keyword Research Tool. This tells you the exact things that people are searching for so for each keyword you can write a short 300-400 word article about it.

When writing the short articles try to include the keyword in the title and mention it throughout the body of the article – but don’t over do it, many SEO experts recommend a keyword density of 1.5% to 3%. If the opportunity presents itself you can work in a product recommendation within the article. Ensure that you go about your affiliate marketing in a ethical way. If you like the product, have used it yourself and truly do want to recommend it then there are no issues with providing your affiliate link – do not push a product that you have no idea about just to make a buck.

If you have exhausted all the keywords to write articles about there are still a plethora of places to go to get ideas and inspiration.

The first place to go to is Yahoo Answers and do a search using keywords related to your chosen topic, or even browsing a related category. This will throw up hundreds, sometimes thousands of questions asked by people. Your job now is to simply take the question posed by the user and write an article around the question and answer of course.

Another way of finding out what people want to know is by going to related forums. In this case, just go to Google and search for “niche keyword+forum” and this will provide many results with forums where people are in active discussions around your niche. There will be many questions, comments and how to guides written by knowledgeable people in the industry.

Yahoo Answers combined with relevant industry forums can provide you with a near endless stream of ideas of topics to write about, but assume that you exhaust even these options then we can call upon something called Latent Semantic Indexing (LSI). This is something that SEO experts think Google uses to assess the quality of the site and basically means “does the site talk about related topics”.

For example, you might create a site about Disney World. Using LSI techniques you can assume that related topics will include:

  • disney world vacation
  • disney world tickets
  • old walt disney world
  • disney world resort
  • walt disney world theme
  • walt disney world question

Any if you just can’t seem to find topics to wrote about, try looking at PLR Articles which are low-cost articles that can be used in many ways.

Tools To Use When Finding Topics To Write About

There are many tools that can be used when brainstorming topics to write about. One of my favorite tools to use when brainstorming topics to write about is mind mapping. Mind Mapping is essentially creating a diagram which is used to represent words, ideas, tasks or other items linked to and arranged around a central keyword or idea. Using mind maps while finding topics to write is a quick and easy way to come up with several topics to write about.

You can use a paper and pen system or software such as FreeMind, which is free software. You don’t need to be an expert in LSI to be able to come up with a number of topics to write about. Just start putting down whatever comes to your mind, look at both the positive and negative sides of your keywords and before you know it you will have a page full of potential articles to write.

Another free tool that does again makes use of visual features is Google’s Wonder Wheel. The Google wonder wheel provides related search terms to the current searched query and enables you to explore relevant search terms to give you more options (read ideas) to write about.

Hi Cemil – thanks for some great information about finding topics to write about. There really is no limit to what people can write about – and you know when you’ve hit on something good because the ideas just start flowing. That’s the time to put pen to paper – or fingers to keys – and often the articles just seem to write themselves! It’s just a matter of finding the right topic.

Hi Cemil,

Useful tools. I had not heard of the Freemind and also doing a forum search with your niche word is a good idea.

Thanks, Eileen.

Hi Eileen,
Some people use a pen and paper, others use a whiteboard. FreeMind is a great tool because not only is it super easy to use – its FREE!

Hi Cemil – great post. I’m a big fan of mind-mapping having used it in the past to make more sense of my uni notes. I’ve recently discovered Freeplane which I believe is an updated version of Freemind – great tool and easy to use.
