When it comes to making money from blogging you often have to put aside your personal interests and focus on niches that are either proven money makers or niches that you don’t have to much of an understand about. Not 
every niche is going to be profitable and by taking the time to do a little research first can save you a lot of time, money and effort.
Before you even start to set up a blog and look at making money from blogging, you need to undertake a the crucial research to identify whether there are people searching for your particular topic. You will also need to closely look at whether it will be easy to get top rankings (i.e. Page 1 of Google) and get an idea of the competition that you will have to battle against to get those top rankings.
You can generally find your golden niche in 3 steps:
1. Start by creating a list of different topics that you are interested in or you believe that people would be interested in reading about. It will always be easier to work on and create articles on topics that you are interested in.
2. Once you have found a niche, the next step in making money from blogging is to use the Google keyword research tool and add the most general phrase from your list of topics into the search box and hit submit. You should ensure that the ‘Exact’ match option is checked as the broad match just means that the keyword phrase is included in part of many other searches so the search volume isn’t very accurate. The Exact match means it only displays the search volume for the exact keyword phrase shown. This is an important factor when looking at making money from blogging.
You should be looking for keywords with a healthy search volume. Too high of a search volume can also have a very high level of competition. Too low of a search volume and the return you may get may not be worth the time and effort that you put into your website.
3. The next step is to check the competition for the keywords. This is done by going to Google and entering the following command: allintitle:”keyword phrase” then go to the advanced search option and select 100 results per page and submit that (‘Allintitle’ finds Web pages in the Google Web search that only contain all of the keywords in their title. The keyword should follow with no spaces). If there is more than one page; go to the very last page that you can and at the top it will tell you something like “Page 5 of about 500 results”, this means that you are realistically competing against 500 other sites.
One Firefox plugin I strongly recommend you use is called SEO Quake as this gives you some great SEO data on each website in the search results. SEO Quake is a pure SEO extension aimed primarily at helping web masters who deal with search engine optimization (SEO) and internet promotion of web sites. A great feature of SEO Quake for making money from blogging is that it gives users the opportunity to create their own parameters and group them into presets to allow easy switching between the presets on the fly while working.
