The Google Sandbox
The Google Sandbox or the “Sandbox Effect” is one of the most well known elements of the great search engines inner workings. Being as it may, there is a great divide in those believing in the existence of The Google Sandbox and those not. Also to date no one from Google has actually admitted to there being a sandbox.
In an interview with the Search Engine Roundtable website, Matt Cutts is reported to have said that there are some things in the algorithm that may be perceived as a sandbox that don’t apply to all industries.
What Is The Google Sandbox
Many believe that the Google Sandbox is a form of filter that is applied to new websites by the bots that crawl them. There have been many different timeframes placed on how long a new website will be in the Google Sandbox.
Many Internet professionals agree that this filtering was implemented in 2004 after which date many experienced a much harder time in getting ranked for chosen keywords.
Why Is Your Site In The Google Sandbox?
The filtering algorithm seems to be fairly complex and various factors play a part on whether you are targeted to spend time in the Sandbox and for how long, those include:
- Whether you have recently purchased a new domain name containing no age
- Whether you have a large volume of backlinks to your website in a short period of time
What To Do While In The Google Sandbox
Just because you are in the Google Sandbox does not mean that your domain is not gaining age by the day. You should continue to grow your website by:
- Adding quality content to your site
- Employing both On-Page and Off-Page Search Engine Optimization techniques
- Begin a Social Marketing campaign and get the word out about your website
- Continue to go about gaining quality backlinks to your website like those through respected article directories.
Launching a website and finding yourself in the Google Sandbox need not be a time to stop what you are doing. It is the best time to continue with your efforts in building your website and getting it ready for when you are finally granted leave from the playpen.

I feel like I’ve been stuck in the sandbox for sure. We launched a site, optimized keywords, got a few backlinks and have trouble ranking for obvious keywords in our site. Oh well, I’ll just keep doing what we’re doing until we’re let out. Thanks for the good advice.
Its a bit of a waiting game sometimes, however if you continue to add quality content regularly and employ solid SEO it should not take too long before you find yourself indexed by all Search Engines and perhaps even ranking high in the search engine results page (SERP).
