WordPress Backup 101 – Staying On Top Of It All

in Wordpress

As I promised in my previous post on the WordPress Backup Tools, I have put together some information on how to organize your new WordPress Blog backups now that you are taking regular backups.

WordPress Backup Storage Strategy Part 1 – Exported WordPress data (XML File)

If you have been using the in-built Data Export function in WordPress and exporting the WordPress XML file to your local computer, you may by now have a few files stored already. What I recommend is to delete all but the latest 2 XML files.

You can identify which files were exported on what dates as the file names are dated, so you can easily delete all but the latest 2 backups.

WordPress Backup Storage Strategy Part 2 – WP-DB-Backup (SQL File)

If you have been using the WP-DB-Backup Plugin to perform backups of the SQL Database and have then emailed to you, you may by now have a few emails in your Inbox. What I recommend is to delete all but the latest 5 SQL backup emails. The reason I say 5 is because that was the first number that poped into my head.

To be honest, if you followed my instruction in the previous post, you would have created a new email address for all your backups to be sent, so you should have more than enough free space if you choose to keep the last 10 backups.

Again you can identify which files were exported on what dates as the file names are dated, so you can easily delete all but the latest 5 backups.

Stay tuned for my upcoming post’s in the WordPress Backup 101 series, including how to use your new backups to restore your WordPress Blog, but make sure you have setup your WordPress Backups first!

Love the idea about auto-emailing your WordPress backup to a dedicated email address (I missed your last post). As long as those backups are stored somewhere safe I can sleep soundly.
